The town of Santa Rosalia was born as a mission in 1705 founded by the Jesuit Juan Maria Basadua. The town was abandoned in 1828 due to epidemics and floods. In 1885 the town was reborn when the mining company El Boleo was founded to exploit copper deposits. The concession was given in exchange for rebuilding and providing services to the town.
