Laguna de San Ignacio, Laguna Ojo de Liebre and surroundings make up the El Bizcaino Biosphere Reserve declared by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site in 1993. The Vizcaíno has three different areas: the first corresponds to the mountains, the second to the plains that make up the Vizcaíno basins, and the third to the coastal area with about 450 kilometers of beaches. The El Vizcaíno Whale Sanctuary is the most important place in the world to protect the Gray whale population. In these areas, whales carry out their breeding and mating, these being the most important and delicate stages of their biological cycle.
