Located in the oasis of the town of San José de Comondú, the mission of the same name was estalished by the Jesuit Fathers Juan María de Salvatierra, Juan de Ugarte, an Julián Mayorga in 1708. The construction of the church was begun by the Austrian Jesuit Franz Inama in 1705, and comprised a large structure of three naves. It was abandoned in 1827, and early in this century was largely demolished to construct a school. In 1972-1973 the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia carried out restoration, particulary of the vaulted central roof and details on the stone walls.
