Santiago mission was originally founded in the places today known as “Ensenada de Las Palmas” on the Gulf of California by Father Ignacio María Nápoli in 1721. Later it was moved twice and finally located at the site of the present town of Santiago in the south of the state. There are no extant ruins of the mission church. The Mission of Santiago was the scene of the opening of the Pericú revolt of 1734 with the assassination of the missionary Lorenzo Carranco, and after 1737 was only temporarily occupied. In 1947 the Combonian Fathers Luis Roggera an Mario Menchini were particulary notable in the restoration of the Patron Santiago as well as that of the original bells.
